Cultural Acceptance Policy
All development and learning occurs within and is influenced by its cultural context. Due to the great diversity within communities, professionals working with young children should be prepared to provide culturally competent services. In order to work effectively with culturally diverse families, professionals must be knowledgeable about their own cultural background and acquire general knowledge of specific cultures, including their beliefs about disabilities and child rearing practices. Professionals must be aware of verbal and non-verbal communication styles used in various cultural contexts. They must also understand how their own cultural beliefs and values have an impact on their interactions with families and be aware of the impact of policies and practices upon children and families from cultural and ethnic minorities.
